Can Watching the News and Spending Too Much Time on Social Media Cause PTSD?

The short answer is yes.

At the time of writing there is a great deal of uncertainty due to the War in Ukraine.

Social media and the mainstream press are broadcasting this very fluid situation twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week.

Whilst being able to watch/listen to the news as it happens can be informative, it is possible to develop PTSD as a result of this type of exposure. This is called vicarious trauma.

How does this happen?

When you watch something happy on TV you feel, well, happy.

When you watch something sad you feel a little down.

You feel those emotions as your brain reacts accordingly.

Your brain gives the same physiological responses to a film or something on TV or social media as it would if you were actually present during the event.

Whilst you know logically that what you have seen on TV has not directly happened to you, your subconscious mind will react a little differently.

Still feeling uncertain?

Have you ever watched a film and held your breath or found that you were feeling anxious as a result of what was going on?

I know that I have!

What can I do to try to prevent the chance of developing PTSD in this way?

Limit your use of social media and be careful of what you watch.
