Panic attacks are a result of feeling fearful or anxious in a specific situation. Panic attacks can be very frightening, some people think that they are going to die during a panic attack as their heart is racing very fast and they are in a heightened state of awareness.
The good news is that panic attacks can be effectively treated. There is no need to live your live ruled by fear.
Case study: Panic Attacks
Individual names have been changed to protect the identity of the client.
Jane aged 54, came to see me after she had experienced feeling anxious and nervous when waiting in a queue at her local supermarket.
Jane recalled feeling hot, flushed and irritated. She also reported that her breathing became rapid and shallow. Jane said that she felt that she just wanted to run back to her car and go home but she was able to hold on until she reached the check out.
Jane said that once she was at the check-out, everything returned to normal and she was able to complete her task by packing up and paying for her groceries.
Jane said that she was surprised that she had been able to manage this and when she reached her car she felt an enormous sense of relief.
Once home she then began to worry that those feelings would return the next time she visited a supermarket so she decided to call a friend to chat about what happened. Her friend had been a client of mine and suggested to Jane that she give me a call.
Treatment
I explained to Jane what anxiety is. I also explained the physiology of a panic attack.
I began by teaching her how to breath properly and how to quickly and easily regain control over her physiology should she have another panic attack.
During subsequent sessions we explored how she was feeling and we discussed any issues in her life that were leading to feelings of anxiety.
She was worried that her husband was going to be made redundant from his job and, as he was the main earner of the family, his loss of employment would create a great deal of financial difficulty.
I taught Jane how to relax and together we discussed how she could take some time for herself during the day. She also wanted to focus her energy, finding more meaningful employment so one session was devoted to improving her self-esteem.
Summary
During the sessions we discussed how to deal with panic attacks, how to improve self-esteem and learn how to develop a plan of action: small steps which can lead to change for the better in a person’s life.
Jane’s husband was not made redundant but she did change her job for one which was more financially and emotionally rewarding.
Note: Jane experienced one panic attack; however, often many individuals experience them on a regular basis. I work with clients who experience panic attacks frequently and infrequently.
To the individual, it does not matter if they have a panic attack each day or each month. The results are still the same, the person feels anxious and some live in terror waiting for the day the panic attack happens again. Many people also fear that the next time they may lose control.
