Can My Anxiety Affect My Relationships?

Many of my therapy clients, who have experienced chronic anxiety, ask the above question. Not only are they concerned with getting help for themselves, but they are also concerned about the potential impact their anxiety is having on family, friends and in the workplace.

Different types of anxiety can affect us in different ways and, whilst it may be possible to mask or control some of the symptoms in certain situations, those close to us will notice subtle changes in the way we behave such as:

  • Being withdrawn
  • Becoming distant or vague
  • Not wishing to engage in social or enjoyable activities
  • Being defensive
  • Developing anger issues
  • Not being so productive at work or carrying out poor quality work

So, what should I do?

First of all, let others around you know that you are struggling with dealing with your anxiety. This can be hard to do as none of us likes to admit we have a problem.

If anxiety is affecting your work, then it is important to make your employer aware of this. If the work itself is the cause of your anxiety you need to highlight this to your employer, so that the problem can be addressed. It may help if you have a work colleague attend the meeting with you for support.

Many people try and deal with their anxiety issues themselves with the support of family and friends. This can cause friction and destroy relationships.

Helping a friend or family member deal with their anxiety can lead to compassion fatigue. This happens when someone shows a willingness to help you and because you either do not do what they say or you do not appear to get any better, the person who is helping you becomes frustrated or even angry.

In order to preserve the quality of your close relationships, is far better to engage the help of a professional who can guild and support you on your journey of recovery. We offer in person, telephone, or Google Meet sessions to suit your needs. Please contact us to discuss your specific needs: email us at marionmcgeough@gmail.com or call Marion on 07551 846468
